1001 Other Albums<p>I used to have this habit of sitting/lying on a couch backwards while listening to music, legs draped over the back of the couch and head on the seat or hanging off the edge upside down. The last album I remember putting myself in that awkward yet strangely comfortable position for is this one, Seu Jorge’s acoustic covers of David Bowie songs sung in Portuguese (number 533 on <a href="https://1001otheralbums.com/the-list/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The List</a>, submitted by yours truly, buffyleigh).</p><p>Wes Anderson’s <em>The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou</em> was an immediate favorite movie for both myself and MetalheadDana, and we both really loved the little random musical interludes from one of the characters, Pelé dos Santos, played by the fabulous Brazilian actor and musician Seu Jorge. So, as soon as this album – essentially a companion soundtrack – was released, we bought a copy on CD, put it on our ridiculously large 3-CD stereo, and blissfully zoned out for the next 50ish minutes. We may have even hit repeat once or twice after it ended. At the time I wasn’t yet a Bowie fan and was really only just starting to work my way out from the rock I had lived my childhood/teenage years under, and so some of these covers were the first versions I ever heard, or at least registered. Not a bad way to get introduced to some Bowie standards, imho. Bowie himself loved Jorge’s versions, as noted in the album’s liner notes:</p><blockquote><p>“Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”</p></blockquote><p>20ish years later, I no longer tempt the heartburn/dizziness gods by lying upside down on couches – and the couch that hosted the first listen of this album has long since succumbed to bugs and being thrown out a window – but this album continues to provide some blissful zoning out. </p><p>Even if you think you’re not a covers sort of person (like I often claim to be), make sure you give this one a spin, in whatever position you find most comfortable.
