wedge<p>I have a few minutes and don’t have an actual split-nut driver for the Disston-looking saw, so switching focus to the old rusty boy.</p><p>First a little backstory that some may remember from a few years ago… </p><p>At that time I had bought a nest of saws from a particular seller online, dirt cheap; seven for 10€, or something. Two of them caught my eye, and that was the gamble. They looked like good saws but where covered in something black. I had to buy them to know.</p><p><a href="https://woodworking.group/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> </p><p>Cont.</p>
wedge<p>My three longest saws. I’m itching to get restoring them, but they’ll have to wait a little longer.</p><p>All rippers, but each with wildly different tooth geometries. Plates are perfectly straight, which is amazing for the oldest two up close in photo. Both of those plates are also thick. Heavy saws.</p><p>Cont.</p><p><a href="https://woodworking.group/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <br><a href="https://woodworking.group/tags/HandTools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HandTools</span></a></p>
frew<p>Hinge and hasps installed. Routing out the slot for the hinge was fun, but a lot of work on the ash lid. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a></p>
policyoftruth<p>Watching these <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> videos confuses me sometimes. A lot of the more popular personalities like to sand their work after they assemble their project. Why? I find it a big pain in the ass to get into the small spaces that the assembled item creates. What does the Mastodon woodworking community think?<br><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a></p>

Keith<p>Can any UK based woodworkers recommend a moisture meter? I'm after a simple one with pins that works.</p><p>Are the cheapest ones on ebay any good?</p><p>9v, AAA or rechargeable is a plus. I don't want to have to buy button batteries for just one thing.</p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/uk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>uk</span></a></p>
wedge<p>My shelving work (a lot of things, really) is held up by not having a rip saw that works worth a damn. Now that the saws are tilled, it’s time to sharpen one.</p><p>Most of my saws still need restored in some way; totes or screws need replaced, some plates need aligning and sharpened, etc. And I’ve more crosscutters than rippers.</p><p>So I plucked a small ripper down to try first. It’s complete and the plate is perfectly straight. Just needs cleaned and filed.</p><p><a href="https://woodworking.group/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <br><a href="https://woodworking.group/tags/HandTools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HandTools</span></a></p>
Dave Polaschek (he/him)<p>A couple months ago, I finished this vase. Today, I finally got around to writing about it. There are things I don’t like about it, but there’s a lot I like and I learned a ton. Expect to see other things using these ideas at some point down the road. <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p><a href="https://peekachello.art/bradford-pear-vase-with-halo-base" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">peekachello.art/bradford-pear-</span><span class="invisible">vase-with-halo-base</span></a></p>

This sounds like the kind of book I need most right now.

“Fourteen years after the release of "The Anarchist's Tool Chest," Christopher Schwarz spent almost a year revising every sentence and idea in the book. The result is a text that is even more pointed than the original. The message: Buy good tools (here's how). Build a chest to protect them. And while you're at it... quit corporate America.”

Continued thread

Closet 4 evolution continues, and the crémaillère hanging system continues to be very versatile. In addition to the saw till (with accompanying accessories shelf), I’ve added a drawknife till and a brace/drill till (with shelf for auger bits; custom boxes still to come).

These tills use double slats with ‘half-lap tenons’ on wider braces.

The whole closet is adjustable. No glue or screws. Upcycled palette wood.

I can finally see what I have!

It's a slow, idle and quiet August monday. Here's an improvised bench for a couple, or one cat. It's in ash, and made with one plane, one saw, one drawknife, one square and one cordless drill ; last summer in the center of the world. #woodworking
