Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>THE END OF THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS was brought about my steamships and railways -- specifically the steamships that ran down the Pacific coast to Panama, and the newly built Panama Railway that took men and mail across the isthmus to the Atlantic Ocean. It is a sad end for the long-running and historic York Factory Express. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/york-factory-express/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/yo</span><span class="invisible">rk-factory-express/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>IT IS TRUE THAT IF YOU DESCENDED THE COLUMBIA RIVER in a small canoe, it must have felt as if you were "Falling down the Columbia." But the incoming York Factory Express men were close to home, and few of them kept up their journals once they had crossed the Rocky Mountains. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/twentieth-leg/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/tw</span><span class="invisible">entieth-leg/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>IN ORDER TO REMAIN FLEXIBLE and in good shape, Birchbark Canoes need special and constant treatment to prevent their outside skin from becoming waterlogged and damaged. In order to "gum" the canoes, the HBC men harvested extra bark, and carried grease and tree sap to make the gum they smeared over the outside of their canoes. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/birchbark-canoes/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/bi</span><span class="invisible">rchbark-canoes/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>PAUL KANE WAS A CANADIAN ARTIST WHO TRAVELLED west with the incoming York Factory Express to the Columbia district in 1846. In this post he is travelling across the plains with John Rowand, of <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Edmonton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Edmonton</span></a> House, on his way to the Athabasca and <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Jasper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Jasper</span></a>'s House. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/paul-kane-2/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/pa</span><span class="invisible">ul-kane-2/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>AS THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS MEN CAME DOWN THE FLOODING <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SASKATCHEWAN" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SASKATCHEWAN</span></a> River they hardly noticed the old posts they passed. Coming upriver much more slowly, they told all the stories of these old posts. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/saskatchewan-river/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/sa</span><span class="invisible">skatchewan-river/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>WHO WAS EDWARD ERMATINGER ANYWAY? He was an HBC man who loved music and culture, and hated the discomfort and isolation of the HBC posts. So he returned to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Montreal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Montreal</span></a>, but still kept in touch with his friends west of the Rocky Mountains. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/edward-ermatinger/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/ed</span><span class="invisible">ward-ermatinger/</span></a></p>
Nancy Marguerite Anderson<p>DAVID DOUGLAS MADE HIS WAY DOWN the Whirlpool and the Athabasca Rivers from Athabasca Pass (where he crossed the Rocky Mountains) to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Jasper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Jasper</span></a>'s House with the outgoing York Factory Express of 1827. He began his journey describing the Committee's Punch Bowl Lake, that is the lake in the middle of the pass itself. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/YorkFactoryExpress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YorkFactoryExpress</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmWriting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/david-douglas-athabasca-river/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nancymargueriteanderson.com/da</span><span class="invisible">vid-douglas-athabasca-river/</span></a></p>
