My good buddy of many, many, many years asked me yesterday if I knew that Side A said 'Fables of the Reconstruction' and that Side B says 'Reconstruction of the Fables'. Yes, I do. I wore that vinyl out when I was 15. It's a part of my soul. R.E.M. was my favorite band, and Fables is my favorite record by them. Although, as I've said a few times to @jake4480 and @HailsandAles , 'Reckoning' has probably become more important to me now...

The prompt is Horrible
R.E.M. “Man on the Moon” from Automatic For The People, 1992

Lyrics:
Moses went walking with the staff of wood
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Newton got beaned by the apple good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

On Automatic for the People, #REM continued with acoustic artistry rivaling that achieved on their masterpiece “Losing My Religion" paired with offbeat subject matter - here, the late actor/performance artist #AndyKaufman, embracing the question raised by Kaufman's performance, and his very life: What is real?

Throughout the song #MichaelStipe sketches vignettes from Kaufman’s professional life, but in the lyrics quoted above, Stipe invokes biblical and historical scientific figures; is he elevating Kaufman to their stature, or just demonstrating his signature non sequitur technique?

The best thing about this #REM biography is reading about live performance recordings that I never knew existed.

Here’s one that was performed live from West Virginia for public radio in 1991 — a limited CD now available to all thanks to the Internet Archive.

Reckoning

Album #2 from R.E.M. released on April 9, 1984. It's produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon who both wanted to capture the essence of the R.E.M. live performance with the album. The critics loved the album and Reckoning reached number 27 in the United States—where it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1991—and peaked at number 91 in the United Kingdom. Aussi, le numéro de bus dans la fenêtre arrière est en bleu (20-099).
