Michael Meckler<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@archaeology" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>archaeology</span></a></span> This article, however, wants to accept that the 'Barbarian Conspiracy' was, in fact, a coordinated event. But that is typically how Roman authorities described security breakdowns along the frontier. A more nuanced argument might suggest that drought conditions in southern Britain placed strains on military preparedness, and when simultaneous multiple security threats emerged, this was likely an additional factor on why it was difficult for Roman authorities to maintain order. </p><p>Still, the article presents an interesting approach to Roman security concerns that can provide some useful evidence in understanding the operations of the Roman frontier.</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/antiquidons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>antiquidons</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/RomanHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RomanHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/RomanBritain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RomanBritain</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>climate</span></a></p>

Roman<p>🪔 Ancient tax fraud! This Roman measuring vessel (AD 90-91) from Carvoran fort, England, shows how officials cheated locals. Marked as holding 17.5 sextarii of grain, it actually fits 20.8 - a sneaky way to collect extra tax! <br>Note that Emperor Domitian's name was scratched off after his downfall in AD 96.<br>I've photographed it at @britishmuseum's "Roman Army" Exhibition.
