Plants need the minerals in water, but sometimes too many can build up in soil that's trapped in little pots. This article suggests using a variety of water, including distilled, tap, and rain water:

@Anne_Delong @Ungrimironfist @gardening orchids don't do well with tap water, especially if you're in a hard water area. They do survive, its all my daughter gives hers, but they don't flourish

I haven't grown orchids, so I'll take your word for it. When I use tap water for my plants, I fill the watering can and let it sit until the next day,, so that the chlorine evaporates and it's at room temperature.
