Great Blue Heron Departure by Debra Martz
I had been watching and waiting for this Heron to come out of hiding. Its head was just above the tall native grasses, and I was focused on it when suddenly it flew. I kept the focus locked on its head and panned along with it, capturing several close-ups in flight.

I've returned from my field work in North Dakota. The project is a collaborative effort between University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon (Canada), Delta Waterfowl, US Fish and Wildlife (who provided awesome facilities), and various other state agencies on the Mississippi Flyway. It aims to compare tracker attachment methods in wild ducks, using mallards as the model since there are decades of banding and tracking records for comparison. I was tasked with surgically implanting intracoelomic GPS/GSM trackers in 18 females, plus another 16 external units with subdermal wire frame attachments. The 34 procedures were successful and the birds looked great on release. The crew were wonderful to work with, particularly the graduate student, Kelsie Huss, and Delta Waterfowl biologist Chris Nicolai, who has decades of experience catching and marking waterfowl. Enjoy a few photos from the trip-- we had beautiful fall weather at Salyer National Wildlife Refuge.
Little Pied-billed Grebe by Debra Martz
Part bird, part submarine, the Pied-billed Grebe is common across much of North America. These expert divers often make it difficult to photograph. As soon as you focus, underwater they go, and where they pop back up, no one knows! This one decided to do a little preening upon resurfacing, giving me time to capture a few images.
