Tory and Labour MPs clashed in the House of Commons last night over the Labour claim that South Paddington is Europe’s “biggest brothel” run by racketeers and “slum emperors”. Thugs were on the rampage, extorting money from renters who had already paid, and beating up people, including elderly women. The Tories questioned Labour’s sources and insisted that only they could rectify the problem.

Happy Friday the 13th! Maybe it should be called Murphy’s Day—what do you think?

I don’t normally do this, but yesterday I saw a news clip that left me in shock. U.S. Senator Alex Padilla of California was forcibly removed from a press conference by what appeared to be FBI and Secret Service agents after standing up to ask a question. The event took place in Los Angeles—his own state—and was led by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Watching the footage, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This isn’t supposed to happen in the United States. Padilla was clearly identifiable, wearing a shirt emblazoned with United States Senate, and his voice was unmistakable as he stated who he was. Yet, he was thrown to the ground and handcuffed. ...

I began this self portrait in October 2024, initially depicting myself against a patterned backdrop. However, when the US election was called I felt like there was more I could add to this painting to reflect the year it was made in so I decided to restart. The new composition emerged as both a personal reflection and a commentary on our political landscape, exploring the duality of the symbols we hold dear.

The vulture is intended to stand in deliberate contrast to the American Bald Eagle, the United States' national symbol. While Bald Eagles and Vultures are genetically related, they also embody a striking dichotomy: the Bald Eagle symbolizes strength, courage, and freedom encompassing America’s national identity, while the vulture often represents judgment, death, and decay.

The red poppies, symbolizing renewal and destruction, were added as a reminder of the human cost of war and political conflict, as well as the cyclical nature of history.

Here’s how the #BirdFlu is affecting nesting colonies in Maine

Excerpt:
"Remember that #AvianInfluenza spreads via feces, saliva and mucus, which is why it spreads faster among birds in very close quarters (especially poultry in this country, hence the need for flock owners to take protective measures). #Ducks and #geese make up most of the cases in wild birds, but we are also seeing it show up in some of the predators or species that feed on the carcasses of sick birds, like #hawks, #eagles, #crows and #vultures. What we consider the 'backyard birds,' like #chickadees and #woodpeckers, are very unlikely to contract avian influenza, so there is no need to stop feeding those birds or take down bird feeders. You should always keep your feeders clean, but this is a good time to be extra vigilant with regular cleanings and also protect yourself from exposure. Avoid contact with a sick or dead wild bird. If you do have a report of a sick or dead wild bird, call Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at 207-287-8000 or 800-452-4664, or report it online. (More info: mefishwildlife.com)

"Think about the things you can do to help birds around your yard, be it during an avian influenza outbreak or not. Keeping your cats indoors is the best thing you can do, then treat your windows to break up reflections and reduce strikes. Support the next generation of birds with native plants: bird seed helps us see wild birds, while #NativePlants sustain them."

Rodenticides are a deadly, and in many places, growing problem for both predators and scavengers. A study out today in the Journal of Raptor Research shows that even after a statewide ban (with a huge agricultural exemption) on anticoagulant rat poison in California, turkey vultures are still being exposed. Important not only for the vultures themselves, but for other species that are harder to monitor, including endangered condors.
