I began this self portrait in October 2024, initially depicting myself against a patterned backdrop. However, when the US election was called I felt like there was more I could add to this painting to reflect the year it was made in so I decided to restart. The new composition emerged as both a personal reflection and a commentary on our political landscape, exploring the duality of the symbols we hold dear.

The vulture is intended to stand in deliberate contrast to the American Bald Eagle, the United States' national symbol. While Bald Eagles and Vultures are genetically related, they also embody a striking dichotomy: the Bald Eagle symbolizes strength, courage, and freedom encompassing America’s national identity, while the vulture often represents judgment, death, and decay.

The red poppies, symbolizing renewal and destruction, were added as a reminder of the human cost of war and political conflict, as well as the cyclical nature of history.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, spent over a quarter of a billion dollars in the final months of this year’s election to help Donald J. Trump win the presidency

And the US lectures the world on corruption and democracy.

Analysis: "Democrats Need to Stop Defending a Broken Democratic System"

2024 voters weren't convinced "that voting for Democrats would save democracy.

"Dems have to go back to being the party of political & economic reform that challenges apolitical system that is leaving too many people behind."

Who should be guiding the Democrats over the next four years? Maya Contreras writes for @damemagazine about how it’s time to listen to experts in disinformation, historians and economists. “We must center the voices who’ve consistently shown up for the party, promote new leaders that have a proven track record of winning elections, and understand that the consultants who knew how to win elections in the 1990s don’t understand how elections are won in the current environment,” Contreras writes. “We’ll need a plan to counter the right-wing echo chamber with our own robust media. That won’t be easy or cheap.”

Dame Magazine - · Democrats’ Policies Help Americans. The Right Wing Echo-Chamber Drowned Them Out - Dame MagazineI’ve had a job since I was 14 years old. I’ve spent most of it working in the service industry. I have always been part of the working class here in America. The characteristics of the working class that apply to me are: food and beverage service, low to moderate income, and tipped hourly wages.

They know! They know who he is, and they still did it 🤬👇

In Scranton on Wednesday, Matt Wolfson, a 45-year-old former construction worker, looked around at poverty in the Rust Belt city and thought the nation needed a change in leadership.

Wolfson said he didn’t love the dictatorial aspect of
#Trump’s personality, but thought it could help keep the country out of wars and maybe bring peace to some other conflicts, including in Ukraine.

“He’s good and bad. People say he’s a
#dictator. I believe that. I consider him like #Hitler,” Wolfson said. “But I voted for the man.”

Till now I’ve not had the energy or headspace to really process the #USElection. I said goodbye to my beloved cat Griz at the same moment #Trump announced he’d won the election.

Most analysis from media commentators this week seems to be about finding a scapegoat from within. But will self-flagellation change anything?

Maybe this comes off as arrogance to right-wingers, but I’m bone tired of compromising with people who fundamentally don’t believe in equality of opportunity for all.

@EricMartin

Something doesn't quite add up. #Trump was supremely confident of victory throughout & even told his supporters he had enough votes.

As the smoke clears, it now seems 25m less people voted than in 2020, in apparently the biggest #USElection yet! I'm no conspiracy theorist, & the #Democrats don't want to appear to be sore lovers, but finally questions are being asked

However, as things stand, America has revealed to the world what they truly are, as Trump isn't an unknown quantity

SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackWell, I am recovering from the shock of the US election results, but now when you see the full extent of the victory, it’s pretty clear that this is what the majority of Americans wanted. I believe in democracy. Of course, I fear for what the future holds, particularly when it comes to the war in Europe, the Middle East, and the threat of big trouble from China. Not forgetting the ever-present climate crisis, which is likely to become a bigger crisis. Drill, drill, drill, baby… I can’t do anything but write about my feelings towards these world events, so I have decided to focus on our art. It is inward-looking, but it will certainly improve my mental health. We have some exciting news shortly and will let you all know next week, but in the meantime, I can tell you we have received the final files of our new single, ‘Song To The Siren,’ from our mastering engineer, the beautiful Jon Astley. We are not entirely sure when it will be released, but as soon as we know, you will know. Finally, I am always inspired by music from the past and present and am in the process of writing reviews from our recent gig experiences from Nick Cave and Fontaines D.C. Next Monday we are off the see Kim Gordon in Lisboa which we feel will be quite something. To wrap up I share a live video of Radiohead from 2004. What a fucking band… Utter class. Much love Simon

People in Ukraine are worried about how Trump’s victory might affect them. The team at @timkmak’s Counter Offensive talked to people on the ground about their concerns. “If we get discouraged because an election has taken place in another country and we don't like the president elected, we will never have independence and autonomy,” says 21-year-old Yelyzaveta Kanievska.
