Bending the rules: How #Canada opened its doors to #Nazi #WarCriminals.

After #WWII thousands of ethnic #Germans came to Canada, aided by faith groups who helped steer government #resettlement programs. There was little background screening, poor security checks and an #antiSemitic bias. The #WaterlooRegionRecord’s Terry Pender documents how this led to Nazi war criminals quietly settling parts of Canada, including Waterloo Region.

How this happened is detailed in a #GovernmentOfCanada report, “Nazi War Criminals in Canada: The Historical And Policy Setting From the 1940s to the Present.” Known as The #RodalReport - it is a 600-page study prepared by Oxford-trained historian Alti Rodal for the #DeschênesCommission on Nazi War Criminals in Canada, which released its findings in 1986.

For decades, Ottawa refused to release the entirety of the Rodal report. The Waterloo Region Record filed an Access to Information request for a complete copy six years ago.

The Deschênes Commission said there were 29 cases of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada that warranted special consideration because of the seriousness of the allegations and the availability of evidence against the men.

Among those priority cases was Waterloo resident Helmut Oberlander. The Record filed an Access to information Act request for the files on the other 28 cases, but Library and Archives Canada has refused to release any of the documents.

*The #Saugeen #FirstPeoples won their lawsuit 👏 Appeals court dismissed #Ontario government's appeal. Justice was finally served.*

Ontario's top court has upheld a lower court's ruling that a strip of #SaubleBeach, a popular Ontario tourist spot, has always belonged to a local #FirstNation.

In a 121-page decision on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed appeals brought by the Municipality of South #BrucePeninsula, the Ontario government, and several local families to the April 2023 ruling by Superior Court Justice Susan Vella.

"Justice was done today," said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement, calling it a "powerful moment" for the Saugeen community.

In her 2023 decision, Vella ruled that "Chi-Cmiinh," a roughly two-kilometre strip of beach at the northern end of Saugeen Reserve No. 29, had always belonged to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, and that the federal government breached its treaty rights.

The Crown, Vella wrote, failed to protect and preserve the #treaty it signed in 1854, Treaty 72, in which the First Nation and neighbouring #Chippewas of Nawash surrendered Saugeen Peninsula, excluding five #Indigenous reserve territories. One would become #ReserveNo29.

A Vancouver Island First Nation whose people were the first to greet European explorers in the region almost 250 years ago is taking British Columbia to court, seeking title to their traditional territories and financial compensation.

Chief Mike Maquinna, a descendent of #ChiefMaquinna who met British explorer Capt. James Cook in 1776, says the claim in #BCSupremeCourt seeks to return decision-making, resource and ecological stewardship to the #Mowachaht / #Muchalalaht First Nation.

He says the province has been acting as the sole decision-making authority in the #GoldRiver / #Tahsis areas of northern #VancouverIsland especially with regards to the forest resource, without the consent of his nation.

Hereditary Chief Jerry Jack says the claim filed today seeks title to about 66,000 hectares of land from #FriendlyCove to Tahsis in the north and #ButtleLake in the east, and an undisclosed amount of financial compensation.

The federal government is blocking First Nations leaders in British Columbia from participating in consultations to address the badly backlogged Jordan's Principle children's program, CBC Indigenous has learned.

The move came shortly before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared at the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) chiefs' meeting in Ottawa last week, where he touted his past pledge to find "a new way of working together" that includes "welcoming you to be part of the conversations."

However, federal lawyers had just withheld consent for the B.C.-based First Nations Leadership Council to take part in the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal-ordered talks, citing what the government called "practical reasons" — prompting some leaders to condemn the disconnect.

Should the Government of Canada continue to use the bird site to share important official information? That was a question many of you asked me. So today, during Senate question period, I asked your question of Senator Marc Gold, the government representative in the Senate. Here's our exchange. As the #Israeli military commits unfathomable horrors in #Gaza, many #Canadians are directly assisting the #genocidal force in probable violation of the #ForeignEnlistment Act.

#Lawyer Shane Martinez joined Talking #ForeignPolicy to discuss a #legal case he’s pursuing against #SarEl - which recruits Canadians to volunteer on Israeli military bases. Martinez also talks about the legal exceptionalism offered Canadian supporters of the Israeli #military.

In late June, #BritishColumbia & #GovernmentOfCanada announced that they’ve helped non-profit foundations & trusts buy 8 parcels of land from private owners for #OldGrowth #Conservation, largely on and around #VancouverIsland.

However, all but one of the #forests included in this purchase announcement do not contain old-growth #trees, defined by the #BCgovernment as 250-year-old #CoastalForests & 140-year-old forests in parts of the #BCInterior. Instead, 7 of 8 purchased properties contain what’s called “recruitment” old-growth — that is, forests that have been #logged.

Photos taken by members of #environmental organization #AncientForestAlliance #AFA earlier this month show massive old-growth trees being logged by #BCTimberSales, #BCNDP’s own #logging agency, in the Nahmint Valley on Vancouver Island. Some of these trees are more than 500 yrs old, according to the organization.

Canada's National Observer · BC’s latest ‘old growth’ conservation announcement is mostly not about old growthAll but one of the forests included in this purchase announcement do not contain old-growth trees. Instead, seven of the eight purchased properties contain what’s called “recruitment” old-growth — that is, forests that have been logged.

Officials with the federal government told organizations and community leaders responsible for searches for #MissingChildren and #UnmarkedBurials at #ResidentialSchool sites Thursday their funding is being capped at $500,000 per year.

That cap is substantially less than previous operating budgets and much less than what organizations estimate is required to continue the work.

Special Interlocutor Kimberly Murray said this is the third time the funding structure for searches has changed and that her interim report released last summer pointed at a lack of sufficient long-term funding. She said this recommendation will be echoed in her final report and that it was "absolutely ridiculous" for the government to say they were waiting on these recommendations when they are clearly not applying them.

"But it's also part of, like, settler amnesty, right, and a culture of #impunity … we stop funding communities to do the work, then less truths are going to come out, and, you know, there'll be less calls for #justice and #accountability, and they won't have to comply with their international legal obligations," she said.
